Programme

Paul McKeon of Dublin was the Referee of the game which was played at Tolka Park, Dublin. French trialist Lamine Sakho made his debut and when Michael Duberry had to leave the pitch with a broken jaw after just ten minutes, he was replaced by Lucas Radebe, who was having his first game of the season. Didier Domi was another given his debut when he came on to replace Jason Wilcox at the start of the second half. He was one of four such substitutions as Danny Mills replaced Gary Kelly at Right Back, Nick Barmby replaced James Milner and Ian Harte replaced Jody Morris. There were further substitutions in the fifty-sixth minute when Stephen McPhail replaced Seth Johnson, and in the seventy-second minute when Aaron Lennon replaced Lamine Sakho and with four minutes to go Martin Woods replaced Dominic Matteo. Villa had taken a two goal second half lead and seemed to have the tie in their keeping until Nick Barmby reduced the deficit in the eighty-fourth minute. In the final minute Ian Harte brought the scores level to force extra-time. The game went to penalties after there was no addition to the score in the additional time. Villa won the shootout by 4-2 after both Ian Harte and Stephen McPhail had missed from the spot.
